Foodwatch criticizes the too high salt content in children's sausages

Children's sausage is mostly touted as a “healthy sausage” by the manufacturers, especially for children. However, the consumer protection organization "Foodwatch" warns of the excessive salt content in individual types of sausage. The salt content is much too high for children.

Consumer advocates of the food platform "Foodwatch" have criticized the sometimes too high salt content in children's sausages. The initiative criticized the "Ferdi Fuchs Mini Würstchen" from Stockmeyer. These sausages are advertised as "healthy". Since the salt content is too high, the nutritional needs of the children are not adequately adapted to the product, as Foodwatch announced today in Berlin.

Children's sausage a daily contribution to healthy eating? “Ferdi-Fuchs” sausages are advertised on the pack with the fact that the sausage is a "daily contribution to healthy eating". However, the children's sausage contains two grams of salt per 100 grams of sausage. This means that the average salt content is about as high as that for adult sausages. However, children have a much lower salt requirement than adults. In this context, the organization speaks of a “label fraud” by the manufacturer. Foodwatch spokeswoman Anne Markwardt said, "Selling parents such a salty product as a daily contribution to healthy eating quickly exposes itself as a fraudulent label."

High salt consumption with health consequences Excessive salt consumption can have after-effects on the health of children. People who consumed too much salt in their childhood may later suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure). This in turn leads to secondary diseases such as heart attack, kidney damage or stroke. In this context, consumer advocates emphasized that not only the Stockmeyer children's sausages had too high a salt content. Corresponding values ​​have also been demonstrated for other manufacturers of special children's sausages. In these cases, too, the products are advertised as "healthy for children", although the salt content is much too high for children. Accordingly, the products of "Böklunder" or "Reinert" should also be affected. The initiative therefore demands from the manufacturers: "Instead of artificially adding vitamins, manufacturers should think about reducing their salt levels."

Manufacturer rejects criticism The food producer "Stockmeyer" rejects criticism of the sausage products. The company pointed out that children would have to eat up to five sausages at once in order to absorb the salt value of 2 grams per hundred grams of sausages specified by Foodwatch. In addition, the "Ferdi-Fuchs" packaging is so-called "storage packaging" that can be used over a longer period of time.

Children eat too much salt In his criticism, Foodwatch refers to scientific advice after high salt consumption leads to increased blood pressure levels in childhood. Studies in the US have found that blood pressure in children has increased massively in the past ten years. The main reasons for this are the increasing lack of exercise, a high-fat diet and also too high salt consumption. Therefore, parents should take care to keep the proportion of table salt in the daily diet as low as possible. In addition, children should move a lot and, above all, eat whole foods. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) points out that the saline content per day must not exceed a maximum of six grams. However, you should not drop below two grams per day, as the feeling of thirst is stopped and internal dehydration threatens.

Foodwatch Campaign "Fed Up"
Consumer advocates recently launched a campaign titled "Fed Up". Foodwatch wants to warn consumers about "misleading advertising practices by food manufacturers". Products are examined in more detail at regular intervals and compared with the advertising promise on the packaging. The tested foods are then presented on the website. (sb)
